Abstract

Previous studies have established that the tips of rabbit oviduct cilia contain a high density of anionic sites and that the binding of polycations such as poly-L-lysine to these sites completely inhibits cilia-mediated ovum transport in vitro. We have developed a method for delivering polycations to the epithelial surface of the intact oviduct to determine whether the blockage of anionic sites will inhibit normal ovum transport in situ. The successful administration of poly-L-Iysine to the fimbrial surface caused a 94% inhibition in the pickup of ovulated ova when compared with contralateral control oviducts. These data suggest a new function for oviduct cilia in ovum transport.
