Abstract

AbstractA search for singularities in the weather at Rapid City, South Dakota is described. It differs from previous investigations of singularities in two respects : (i) the use of pressure and temperature data from radiosondes, and (ii), the application of analysis‐of‐variance techniques to departures of weekly means from fitted annual trends. These analyses lead to the rejection of the hypothesis that there are no weekly singularities in the climatic elements studied. The singularities are tentatively ascribed to week‐to‐week variations in the probability of Arctic outbreaks into the Great Plains region.
