Abstract

Polymorphism of life span were revealed in wild type fruit flies, D. melanogaster; several purebred strains possessing specific longevity patterns could be established by sib-mating through 13 to 20 generations from the same wild strains. Diverse sex differences were found among highly purebred strains. These results suggested the existence of major genes controlling life span on autosome(s) and on X chromosome in D. melanogaster. The penetrance of these genes is incomplete, probably affected by environmental factors.
