Abstract

Alloying effects in ${\mathrm{TiC}}_{x}{\mathrm{N}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}$ compounds are investigated by first-principles calculation and experimental electron energy loss spectroscopy. The low energy loss spectra as well as the nitrogen and carbon $K$ edges are considered and similar changes can be observed in the calculated and experimental spectra when the alloy composition is modified. These composition-dependent changes in the spectra are related to modifications in the scattering properties of the atomic shells near the absorbing atoms when the carbon and nitrogen relative concentrations are modified.
