Abstract

Abstract This paper provides an introduction to basic probabilities in their application to forensic science. After a definition of probabilities, odds and Bayes theorem, these concepts will be linked with the issues of inference in criminal trials. The three principles of evidence interpretation are exposed and illustrated with examples. Finally the case assessment and interpretation framework is presented, stressing upon the hierarchy of propositions, the structure of evaluative statements and the transposed conditional.
