Abstract

An initial acetone extract of the seed of Zea mays var. Country Gentleman was purified by fractionation with ethyl acetate and subsequent paper chromatography, using solvents that did not cause the destruction of indolepyruvic acid (IPyA). A compound was detected which corresponded with IPyA in its R f values in a number of solvents, in its chromogenic reactions, in its decomposition pattern on ammoniacal chromatography, in its ultraviolet absorption spectrum, in its behavior on paper electrophoresis, and in its biological activity in the Avena straight growth test and tomato root assay. It is concluded that indolepyruvic acid is present in maize.
