Abstract

Serologic tests for swine influenza were conducted in Illinois from December 1963 to May 31, 1970. Results showed that sera from 52 per cent of the 160 herds and 21 per cent of 6,499 animals were reactive. Reactive herds were detected in 86 per cent of the counties tested. Major epidemics of swine influenza probably occurred in Illinois swine in 1963, 1966, and 1969, with minor epidemics interspersed annually. The reactor rate increased with age. These results favor a hypothesis of periodicity due to the increase and decrease of susceptible animals.
