Abstract

AbstractThe presence of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) activity in the direction of oxaloacetate formation in Rana ridibunda erythrocytes was detected. In addition, the levels of all the individual enzymes leading from phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) to succinate production have been determined in Rana ridibunda hemolysates. Incubation of the intact red cells in the presence of the PEPCK activity inhibitors, quinolinic, and mercaptopicolinic acid resulted in the inhibition of the succinate levels whereas the pyruvate levels were increased. The flow of carbon through PEPCK indicates its participation to an alternative route of PEP metabolism with the advantage of two additional molecules of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) production per glucose molecule catabolized. The possible mechanisms that could control the flow of PEP either towards pyruvate or towards oxaloacetate in Rana ridibunda erythrocytes are discussed. © 1993 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.
