Abstract

Considerable progress has been made in understanding the synthesis of the DNA of the even-numbered T phages. A T4 phage-induced DNA polymerase has been demonstrated by Aposhian and Kornberg (1962), and this enzyme has been shown to be encoded by gene 43 by deWaard et al. (1965) and by Warner and Barnes (1966). Speyer et al. (1966) have given evidence that this enzyme is intimately connected with DNA synthesis. In addition, DNA ligase, an enzyme which has been implicated in the synthesis of ϕX174 DNA (Goulian et al., 1967), has been shown to be induced by infection with T4 phage (Weiss and Richardson, 1967, and Becker et al., 1967), and gene 30 has been shown to be its structural gene (Fareed and Richardson, 1967).
