Abstract

Evidence for a long term process scale for social change in modern man settled in place via agriculture and engaged in trade and war

Highlights

  • We have initiated a model of human social systems by the following near standard physical strategy

  • As a settled or near settled relatively dense interactive form, it existed in many parts of the world for periods up to a number of millenia, periods over which further expansion into land areas had ceased, population density grew perhaps from a few persons per sqkm to tens of persons per sqkm

  • If we start from Osborne, we find the following notion defined three times - in Greek times themselves, by the classical scholar Louis Robert, and by Osborne forty years later

Summary

Introduction

We have initiated a model of human social systems by the following near standard physical strategy. The condensed phase of man's history, while perhaps averaging on the order of 500 years and 300 km with a wide time range like 200 to 1200 years and space range of perhaps 50 to 800 km, covers two kinds of social organization, and - as we have suggested - that with such a scaling range, the magnitude of a condensed cultural inventory really might have to consist of more like a few hundred thousand units In such a case, anthropologists have perhaps only sampled close to 1% of all cultures, and may have a primitive sense of a 10% sample.
