Abstract

In 2002, the National Kidney Foundation published the KDOQI (Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative) clinical practice guideline on the evaluation, classification, and stratification of chronic kidney disease (CKD; Fig 1).5 In this guideline, CKD was defined as the presence of kidney damage (an alteration of structure or function) with or without decreased glomerular filtration rate (GFR) for at least 3 months or GFR <60 mL/min/1.73 m2 with or without further evidence of kidney damage for at least 3 months.
