Abstract

Event-related potential (ERP) changes have not been studied following opiate administration in normal individuals. Limited studies have been done in addicts or patients. Fentanyl did not affect the VEP in humans undergoing surgery1 In animals, sensory cortex EPs are not affected by narcotics, but amplitude of sensory evoked potentials in association and motor cortices was increased2–4. Such studies suggest that opiates may have effects on the later, more cognitive, event-related potential components and the CNV, rather than on primary sensory components.
