Abstract

The effects of activation of retinal GABAB receptors with baclofen on event-related potentials (ERP) arising in the primary visual center (the tectum) on illumination of the retina with white light and on electrical stimulation of the optic nerve were studied in dark-adapted carp. These studies showed that baclofen-induced decreases in the amplitude of the electroretinogram (ERG) b wave were accompanied by increases in ERP amplitude both to light stimuli and to electrical stimulation of the optic nerve. It is suggested that this increase is due to an increase in the response of tertiary retinal neurons to light and/or an increase in the excitability of tectum neurons due to a reduction in tonic influences from the visual afferent stream.
