Abstract

After a long period of unequal treatment, women have achieved legal equality with men in many Western countries. Even so, some correction of past habits and attitudes remains to be achieved in everyday life, and in religious education in particular. To set the stage, we first discuss in a general way desiderata concerning the attitudes and activities of RE teachers and pupils, RE textbooks, and reading and interpretation of the Bible. We then report on a case study of religious education with 15 and 16 year olds at a German comprehensive school, which used the narrative of Zelophehad's daughters Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah
