Abstract

In order to get information about the release of potassium during combustion of herbaceous biomass, the chemical form of potassium in corn stover was identified and it was found that most potassium exists as potassium chloride (KCl). Based on this, release of KCl at normal combustion temperatures was measured using simultaneous thermal analysis, and results showed that evaporation dominates the KCl release. A model to calculate the evaporation rate was developed and validated using data of our experiments. Comparison of calculation with data in literature on biomass combustion was also performed and discussed.
