Abstract
This article aims to bring together various strands in analysis and research on the origins of volleyball as one of the youngest sports of the twentieth century. It reviews the historical, social, educational, political and religious factors that influenced and conditioned the context in which volleyball was first played; and it then considers how the continuous development of volleyball rules and the constant technological innovations in this sport have made volleyball a spectacle that obeys and favours the television corporations. In short, the article examines the origin of a particular sport from a historical point of view in order to understand the uses that have been made of it, first as a civilizing element and then as an instrument for evangelism.
