Abstract

Six patients participating in analytic group-therapy for one year (30 sessions) were evaluated V with MMPI before and after treatment.Some methodological and theoretical issues in the assessment of outcome are discussed, in relation to these few patients and their MMPI.As a generally accepted instrument for personal assessment the MMPI is often used to analyse changes following therapy. By a simple statistical analysis one may find significant changes for the group as a whole on certain scales and subscales. A more penetrating analysis of the results demands a pretest hypothesis concerning the relevant variables in therapy, and the kind of changes wanted should be described before treatment starts. The need for contemporary, normative standardization of the MMPI, with respect to a Scandinavian cultural pattern, is stressed.In this study there were significant positive changes for the patients as a group on scales F, K, Hs, Pa, Pt, Sc, Si and the ego-strength (ES) and anxiety-scale (AI).
