Abstract

A Statistical Evaluation of the Penetration of American Movies in France. American movies, which come into France in large numbers (they account for about 30 % of general attendance), do not, however, seem to pose a threat to the health of our national movie industry. A statistical study comparing the success of French and American films over the last 20 or, even 40 years, points to a relative stability in the ratio of films shown and the number of persons attending them. It shows them to be more complementary than competitive and questions the « invasion » theory often put down to American cultural imperialism. French film production, even with its ups and downs, far from giving way before Hollywood imports, continues to impose its supremacy (50 % of total attendance) and seems to be able both to take advantage of the American image and return its challenge.
