Abstract

This paper presents an assessment of wind energy potentials of six selected locations in the Gujarat, India, by using a 19-year (1995-2013) ERA-interim wind speed data subjected to two-parameter Weibull distribution function. The results showed that the annual wind speed at a location of Okha and Motisindholi is having an average of 7.1 m/s and 7.0 m/s respectively, and Sanodar has lowest annual wind speed of 3.8 m/s. The maximum and minimum average wind power density and energy are 280.55W/m2, 2469 kWh/m2/year at Okha and 54.51W/m2, 479 kWh/m2/year at Sanodar respectively. Furthermore, Okha and Motisindholi are suitable for the wind turbine applications where as Jafrabad, Veraval and Dandi can be considered for marginal wind power development development based on their respective annual mean wind speeds and power densities.
