Abstract
AbstractWeld-zone corrosion involving accelerated attack of both weld metals and heat-affected zones has been investigated using eleven steels, eight commercial welding consumables and welding parameters relevant to Canadian shipyard practice. In a series of laboratory exposures based mainly on free corrosion “tank tests” and galvanostatically controlled anodic dissolution tests, an excellent correlation between corrosion rate and the chemical composition of steels and weldments has been observed. These data confirm the trends identified earlier by Scandinavian investigators and can be used to define ship fabrication parameters which minimize the problem of weld-zone corrosion in icebreaking ships.
