Abstract

Objective To study the effects of four solutions, lactate Ringer (LR) solution, Euro-Collins (EC) solution, hyperosmolar citrate adenine (HC-A) solution, and WMO-1 solution, on porcine small bowel graft preservation. Methods The animals were given various solutions and randomly divided into 4 groups. And each group was redivided into three subgroups based on preservation time (10 h, 18 h, and 24 h). After preservation, the porcine segmental small bowel autotransplantation was performed. Results After the small bowel preservation for 10 h, on postoperative day 21 the recipient survival rate was 100% in all groups. After the small bowel preservation for 18 h, the recipient rate was 60% (LR), 100% (EC), 80% (HC-A), and 100% (WMO-1). After the small bowel preservaton for 24 h, no animals were survived more than 21 days in LR group, in HC-A, EC and WMO-1 groups the recipient survival rate was 20% , 80% , and 80% , respectively. Intestinal mucosal ATP level and Na+ - K+ ATPase activity were higher in EC and WMO-1 groups than in LR and HC-1 groups. Conclusion Small bowel grafts could be effectively preserved for 10 h by the LR and HC-A, and for 18 h by EC and WMO-1 solutions. Key words: Intestine, small; Organ preservation; Tissue survival
