Abstract

This paper focusses on the tribological characteristics of biodegradable Canola Oil Methyl Ester (COME) dispersed with various concentrations of nano-zirconium oxide i.e., ZrO2 - 0.5, 1, and 1.5 wt%. The nano particles are characterized using TEM and XRD analyses. The wear and friction properties were investigated using the four-ball tribometer and the wear and friction monitor. The worn surface and surface roughness analyses were examined using SEM/EDS and atomic force microscopes respectively. The Hastealloy pin material lubricated by COME with 0.5 wt% of ZrO2 shows significant lowering of the values of average frictional torque, mean wear scar diameter, frictional coefficient, wear, and average surface roughness in comparison with other metalworking fluids under study.
