Abstract

A grid-tied inverter can be designed to operate in boundary conduction mode or discontinuous current mode to achieve high efficiency and high power density. However, the switching frequency variation in boundary conduction mode can be a problem. Although the switching frequency in discontinuous current mode is fixed, the output current becomes distorted due to the resonant between inductor and parasitic output capacitors of switching devices during zero current intervals. The distorted output current may have influences on the total harmonic distortion. A trapezium current mode has been proposed to solve these problems. In this paper, the performance evaluation including waveform analysis, efficiency comparison and conduction loss analysis of trapezium current mode in comparison to the discontinuous current mode is performed. Both operations are implemented in a 600 W grid-tied inverter.
