Abstract

Objectives: (1) To examine the clinical characteristics of a patient with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) at Ho Chi Minh City Hospital of Odonto-Stomatology; (2) To evaluate the treatment results of TMD of the above study subjects. Subjects - methods: Descriptive and prospective studies with clinical intervention, no control over 40 patients diagnosed with TMD and treated at the Special Treatment Department – Dental Hospital Ho Chi Minh City from July 2019 to March 2020. Results: Clinical characteristics of patients with TMD: ratio of women: men was 1.86: 1; focus on the age group 25-44. Headache symptoms accounted for the highest proportion: 77.5%, followed by pain in the jaw when moving and hearing joint sounds: 70.0%. The degree of TMD according to the history is moderate - severe, dominating up to 85.0%. On clinical examination before treatment: limit movement of the jaw when opening the mouth to a maximum of 45%, limit when moving the jaw: 55%; pain with jaw movement: 70%; synapse and dysfunction in temporal joint: 85.0%; pain in the joints when touching: 55.0%; muscle pain to the touch is 32.5%; occlusion grade I: 72.5% left and 85% right; classify the degree of TMD according to the Helkimo’s scale: medium level: 45.0%, light: 32.5%, heavy: 22.5%. Evaluation of treatment results for TMD: the main applied methods are: medicine, occlusal splints and occlusal adjustment. Treatment results after 1 week of the end of treatment and follow-up after 3 months improved in the proportion of patients with limited jaw movement, jaw movement pain, joint pain when palpation and muscle pain. palpation, dysfunction in temporal jaws with significant differences; percentage of patients with good response to treatment: 17.5%, average: 72.5% and bad: 10.0% at follow-up visit after 3 months. Conclusion: The TMD treatment results showed an improvement in symptoms and signs before and after treatment with significant differences.
