Abstract

The software process maturity framework is considered in terms of its relationship to key software quality problems within organisations. This paper presents the results of empirical research on software quality project management and organisational issues, across six collaborating casestudy organisations. The evaluation and comparison of the software development environments is undertaken in relation to the SEI model. This work suggested both weaknesses and strengths of the model for information systems environments and these are discussed in relation to other research work published within the subject area. The paper concludes with three hypotheses suggested by the research undertaken, which as yet remain untested:(i) within an information systems environment quality management is embedded within the project management function, as part of the risk analysis activity. (ii) within an information systems environment the process management function is embedded within systems management in terms of decision making, but most often implemented by those with responsibility for quality management or standards. (iii) within an information systems environment the pace of process improvement (either to achieve productivity gains or improved software quality) is so great that the feedback loop' concept within a cyclic process improvement programme is difficult to sustain. RESEARCH AIM AND METHODOLOGY The overall aim of the research program was to gain a better understanding of software quality issues in an information systems environment. This was achieved through five distinct phases of activity: (i) Casestudy work in five financial organisations studying the factors affecting quality management, quality control and quality assurance. (ii) Selection of a recognised approach; namely the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) for improving software quality.
