Abstract

This article seeks to identify the periodontal and microbiological conditions of obese individuals undergoing bariatric surgery. The focus on obese patients is due to obesity being a growing public health problem, which is increasing in important epidemic proportions all over the world. Thus, this is a cross-sectional study with a qualitative approach, in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) from March to October 2018, with 25 obese patients who proposed to participate in the research. The periodontal situation was identified as: periodontal health, gingivitis and periodontitis. In the microbiological examination, the bacteria Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (AA), Porphyromonas gingivalis (PG), Streptococcus oralis (SO) and Universal (UN) were identified and quantified using real-time PCR. There was a statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) between the degrees of obesity in terms of gingivitis and periodontitis. The (AA) presented statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) in the situation of gingivitis and periodontal health. It can be concluded that (AA) had a higher average amount in obese individuals, even in the situation of periodontal health and PG lower amount in gingivitis and higher in periodontitis. There was a prevalence of (AA) and (PG) in the supragingival location, and prevalence of (AA), (PG) and (SO) in the subgingival location.
