Abstract

Hip pathology in children often manifests as a limp or abnormal gait, which is a common presentation in primary care. Although the majority of cases are self-limiting and can be managed without specialist referral, prompt identification of the more sinister causes is crucial to avoid permanent joint damage and long-term disability. This article outlines a systematic approach for dealing with a limping child in the community and highlights the key points to gain from the history and examination to enable easy identification of the cases that need to be referred.
