However, there are some obstacles that need to be overcome, like the lack of knowledge in rearing its embryos and larvae. The basic procedures to cultivate the early development stages need to be investigated and enhanced, in order to start producing sea urchin larvae in large amounts. In this study, it was evaluated the best time post-fertilisation to perform the first water exchanges and the best way to do it, based on the survival, embryonic development stage and overall water quality obtained in a laboratory assay. Several specimens were harvested from the shore of Peniche and brought to the laboratory, where they were induced to reproduce by an injection of 1 mL of potassium chloride through the peristomial membrane. Twelve cylindrical-conical recipients containing 1 L of sterile seawater were prepared with a density of 100 oocytes.mL-1. Sperm was added in a ratio of 500 spermatozoa :1 oocyte. The water was renewed 12 hours after fertilisation on 6 recipients. It was decanted on 3 of the recipients, in which the bottom layer, containing sinking unfertilised oocytes, was discarded. Afterwards, the lost volume was compensated with sterilized water. On the other hand, the embryos were filtered through an 80 µm sieve and the water entirely replaced in the other 3 recipients. The same methods were used on the 6 remaining reservoirs, but only 24 hours after fertilisation. Samples were collected during 72 hours, with a 12 hours’ periodicity. The embryos were counted and the development stage was identified. At the end of the assay, a sample of each container was collected to assess water quality through the amount of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate. Initially, the density of P. lividus embryos was higher when water renewing occurred 12 h post-fertilisation than after 24 hours. The filtration of the embryos and larvae did not cause differential mortality, or even differences on the embryonic development, compared with decantation of the rearing water. Therefore, filtration by using a sieve is adequate and effective for P. lividus larvae’s routine processes in aquaculture, namely in the water renewal of the rearing systems, which helps maintaining a good water quality for animal welfare.
