Abstract

In order to evaluate the HLB number or the hydrophile-lipophile-balanced temperature, T HLB, of commercial surfactant which is a mixture of unidentified surfactants, the previously described equation of the set of HLB planes is simplified. The effect of temperature, oil/water ratio, and the surfactant concentration on the three-phase region or PIT (phase inversion temperature) is clarified by the equation. The HLB number of a lipophilic commercial surfactant, whose PIT is below 0°C, can also be obtained by mixing with hydrophilic pure surfactant.
