Abstract
Introduction: This descriptive study has been made in order to evaluate the factors which affect the sleep habit and quality of Balikesir University Health College students. Method: The study was carried out between 23 March and 15 April 2017. Students who receive education in nursing and midwifery departments of Balikesir University Health College have taken part in the research. Nursing students took the survey, formed by researchers by reviewing the literature, in classroom environment. Descriptive analysis was made and continuous data were compared with student-t and ANOVA tests. Results: The average age of the students in this study is 21.4 ± 1.8 and 84.1% of students are female and 65.7% of students are nursing students. 37.6% of students taken part in this study stated that their academic achievement is good, 69.7% of students said their incomes and expenses are equal and 65.9% of students expressed that they stay in dorm. It is determined that 62.7 of students have poor sleep quality according to the students ' PUKI points average. It has been found out that 51.4% of the students wake up at the least once at night, 18.7% lived sleep problem in the past and 51% sleep 6-7 hours at night. Students who are in the first class degree, who state their academic achievement is bad, students who have gastrointestinal discomfort in the last month who and have acute infection and psychological problem have meaningfully higher PUKI points averages than students who are not at the first grade, who state their academic achievement is very good, students who didn't have gastrointestinal discomfort in the last month and students who didn't live acute infection and psychological problem (p < 0.05) Also students who smoke/use alcohol, drink more than five cups of coffee/tea per day, wake up at the least once time at night, had sleep problem in the past, are always late for lessons and eat something before sleep have meaningfully higher PUKI points averages statistically than students who don't smoke/use alcohol, don't drink more than five cups of coffee/tea per day, don't wake up at night, didn't live sleep problem in the past, are not late for the lessons and don't eat something before sleep(p < 0.05). Conclusion: It is determined that students have significant sleep problems; class, academic achievement, physical and psychological discomfort, using cigarette/alcohol, tea consumption, having sleep problems at night, waking up without rest and snacking before bed are related to sleep quality. It is advised to inform nursing and midwifery students, who are taking health discipline education, about importance of sleep and factors related to sleep quality. Giris: Bu tanimlayici calismanin amaci, Balikesir Universitesi Saglik Yuksekokulu ogrencilerinin uyku aliskanliklarini ve kalitesini etkileyen faktorleri degerlendirmektir. Yontem: Calisma 23 Mart-15 Nisan 2017 tarihleri arasinda yurutulmustur. Arastirmaya Balikesir Universitesi Saglik Yuksekokulunda ogrenim goren hemsirelik ve ebelik ogrencileri alinmistir. Arastirmacilar tarafindan literatur taranarak olusturulan anket formu hemsirelik ogrencilerine sinif ortaminda uygulanmistir. Tanimlayici analiz yapilip surekli veriler student-t ve ANOVA testleri ile karsilastirilmistir. Bulgular: Bu calismada ogrencilerin yas ortalamasi 21,4 ± 1,8 olup %84,1’ini kiz ve %65,7’si hemsirelik bolumu ogrencileri olusturmaktadir. Ogrencilerin %37,6’si akademik basarisinin iyi oldugunu, %69,7’si gelirlerinin giderlerine denk oldugunu, %65,9’u yurtta kaldigini ifade etmistir. Ogrencilerin PUKI puan ortalamasina gore 62,7’sinin kotu uyku kalitesine sahip oldugu saptanmistir. Ogrencilerin %51.4’unun gece en az bir defa uyandigi, %18,7’sinin gecmiste uyku sorunu yasadigi, %51’inin gece 6-7 saat uyudugu bulunmustur. Arastirmada birinci siniflarin diger siniflara gore, akademik basarisini kotu olarak belirtenlerin cok iyi olarak belirtenlere gore, son bir ayda gastrointestinal rahatsizlik yasayanlarin yasamayanlara gore ve akut enfeksiyon geciren ve psikolojik bir sorun yasayanlarin yasamayan gruba gore Pittsburgh Uyku Kalitesi Indeksi puan ortalamalari istatistiksel olarak anlamli derecede yuksek cikmistir (p < 0,05). Ayrica sigara/alkol kullananlarin kullanmayanlara gore, gunluk bes bardaktan fazla cay/kahve tuketenlerin tuketmeyenlere gore, gece en az bir defa uyananlarin uyanmayanlara gore, gecmiste uyku sorunu yasayanlarin uyku sorunu yasamayanlara gore, derslerine her zaman gec kalanlarin gec kalmayanlara gore ve gece uyumadan once atistiranlarin atistirmayanlara gore Pittsburgh Uyku Kalitesi Indeksi puan ortalamalari istatistiksel olarak anlamli derecede yuksek cikmistir (p < 0,05). Sonuc: Ogrencilerin onemli olcude uyku sorunlarinin oldugu; sinif, akademik basari, fiziksel ve psikolojik rahatsizlik, sigara/alkol kullanimi, cay tuketimi, gece uyku sorunu yasama, dinlenmis olarak uyanamama, yatmadan once atistirma ile uyku kalitesinin iliskili oldugu gorulmustur. Saglik disiplini egitimi alan hemsirelik ve ebelik ogrencilerinin uykunun onemi ve uyku kalitesi ile iliskili faktorler konusunda bilgilendirilmesi onerilmektedir.
