Abstract

Purpose: Quantitative sensory testing of pressure pain threshold (PPT) is a measure of pain sensitization, i.e., altered pain processing mechanisms in the peripheral and/or central nervous system that cause increased sensitivity to pain. PPT values are lower in people with osteoarthritis (OA) and contribute to the pain experience. PPT testing may be a useful tool in classifying pain phenotypes, which may require different management strategies. However, PPT testing requires special equipment, which are not routinely used in clinics.
