Abstract

An ultrasonic Doppler instrument was used at Cook County Hospital to provide a quick safe method to obtain audible signals of fetal heart tones by means of a small transducer placed on the skin. It was used to study patients under 20 weeks' gestation who presented themselves to the prenatal clinic for routine prenatal care. Of 130 observations the Doppler instrument was 97 per cent accurate in picking up heart sounds after 10 weeks and 100 per cent accurate after 16 weeks after the last menstrual period. In 40 cases of pregnancies over 20 weeks' gestation in which three observers could hear no heart tones by auscultation, 23 showed evidence of fetal life by the ultrasound technique which was subsequently confirmed as correct. In 31 cases of third trimester vaginal bleeding, the Doppler instrument diagnosed 8 out of 9 positive placenta previas, as confirmed at delivery.
