Abstract

The preoperative evaluation and preparation of the patient who has a cardiac disease call for a preventive approach with anticipation of difficulties that may arise during the surgical procedure or in the postoperative period. Potential hazards include potassium depletion (notably in patients taking thiazide diuretics), hidden fluid retention, and a tendency toward vagotonia.
