Abstract

The purpose of this article is to evaluate whether there is and what is the antimicrobial activity and antifungal activity of three proposed substances and their combinations. Selenium, a substance widely used and studied as an antioxidant; ketoprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug widely used for various cases of inflammation; and ascorbic acid, also known as vitamin C, used as a necessary molecule in various biochemical processes in the human body. This work aims to carry out an in vitro antimicrobial activity test and evaluate the antifungal activity of selenium and ascorbic acid (vitamin C), compared to the effects caused by ketoprofen. It was observed that the combination of ketoprofen and selenium has little antimicrobial action. However, when we consider the two compounds in isolation, just ketoprofen or just selenium, we have the presence of antimicrobial action by both. And this discrepancy is even greater when there is an association between ketoprofen and ascorbic acid, the antimicrobial activity has been shown to be almost non-existent. In the antifungal test, it was observed that all compounds in all dilutions exhibited antifungal activity against the species tested.
