Abstract
The major causes of death and disability in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are cerebral ischemia and intra-ventricular hemorrhage. The monitoring of cerebral oxygenation and hemodynamics is of utmost importance for the care of the preterm infant. A small, inexpensive and continuous measuring bedside instrument is a substantial extension of the NICU. The technique of near infrared spectrophotometry (NIRS) might provide in this need.
