Abstract

In the present study, the effect of Origanum vulgare essential oil is demontrated against Varroa destructor observed on bee hives Apis millifera intermisa L. in the fields by beekeepers those noted significant mortality of the mite. The hydrodistillation gave a yield of 2.34% of essential oil composed mainly of m-cymene (29.01%), γ-terpinene (26.67%), carvacrol (12.25%) and thymol (7.89%) identified by CGMS. The best acaricidal activity of O. vulgare essential oil (61.02%) is caused by the dose D1 (3%) with an efficiency rate of 83.38%. These results are very interesting compared to those obtained by the Apiston homologated product which gave 70.23% mortality with an efficiency of 86.83%. This makes this essential oil an alternative promising to the chemicals products used to protect the bee and hive products, especially since the toxicity test revealed that the bee showed no sensitivity to this essential oil.
