Abstract

Afinite element method of analysis was used to predict what effect changes in overall splice length and nail density would have on the stiffness, maximum wood stresses, and maximum nail shear forces in nail-laminated assemblies fabricated with 38 mm x 140 mm lumber, 20d ring shank nails, and non-reinforced staggered butt joints. Based on this analysis, the manufacture of tri-laminated assemblies with overall splice lengths less than 0.91 m is not recommended. To increase the mean ultimate strength of nail-laminated assemblies with staggered butt joints, it is recommended that the outside butt joints (and only the outside butt joints) be reinforced.
