Abstract

Aim: Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the absence of auditory stimuli. Tinnitus may affect daily life activities and cause complaints of difficulty in concentration, emotional distress and sleep disturbance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between tinnitus and sleep quality. Materials and Methods: Eighty-one patients (42 females, 39 males) with subjective tinnitus lasting more than 6 months in the last 6 months were included. Tinnitus handicap index (THI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) questionnaires were used. Results: There was a moderate statistically significant positive correlation between THI and both PSQI (r=0.411; p=<0.001) and ISI (r=0.436; p=0.003). As THI increased, PSQI and ISI increased. Conclusion: Evaluating sleep quality is important in treatment planning to control tinnitus and improve the quality of life in tinnitus patients. Keywords: Tinnitus; Sleep Quality; Questionnaire
