Abstract

In this chapter, the accuracy and limitation of the simplified superposition design method for concrete encases composite columns subjected to biaxial bending recommended by the Chinese YB9082-97 Specification is evaluated using an accurate iterative computer-based method. Comparisons made between the two methods in the determination of load carrying capacities of rectangular cross sections with symmetrically placed H-shaped and box-shaped structural steel indicate that the simplified method appears to be conservative on all cross-sectional cases studied, but displays different overall accuracies on cross sections with different structural steel shapes and different load eccentricities. Application of the simplified method to circular cross sections is also discussed. Based on the axial force and bending moment superposition concept, a new simplified design equation for such sections is proposed. The chapter presents design examples to demonstrate the simplicity and validity of the proposed design method. Specification has been evaluated by the chapter using an iterative computer-based analysis and design method.
