Abstract

ABSTRACT The layer between asphalt concrete layer and bridge deck is called waterproof-adhesive layer. It has two functions: 1) one is to prevent the bridge deck from being eroded by water and 2) another is to supply bonding capacity between pavement and bridge deck. Investigations indicated that damage of concrete bridge pavement has close relationship with waterproof-adhesive layer. Therefore, more attentions should be paid to it. Results of structure analysis show that shear stress occurs between the asphalt concrete layer and bridge deck is greater than those between road structure layers. That means shear performance of waterproof-adhesive layer should be considered as a key factor in bridge deck pavement design. Flexible materials, such as modified asphalt membrane and modified asphalt coating, are often used in concrete bridge pavement. In this paper, shear performance of 4 different modified asphalt membranes and 3 different modified asphalt coating is measured by skew shear experiment. Grey correlation analysis method is employed to study the correlation between impact factors and shear performance. According to the analysis result, the most significant impact factor to shear performance is the tension strength of membranes for modified asphalt membranes and testing temperature for modified asphalt coating, respectively. This conclusion may be able to provide some theoretical support to the design of waterproofing materials.
