Summary

Introduction

The purpose of wound dressing or cover is to provide moist environment, reduce bioburden, promote granulation and epithelisation, shorten duration of inflammatory response, be useful as primary wound dressing and to prevent nosocomial infection. The Surgical site infection (SSI) incidence was 0.5% to 20% depending on type of operation and underlying patient status [3]. In a study conducted in Northern India, out of 153 patients 87 (58.86%) patients had acquired HAI [7]. Incidence in Southern India was found to be 41% [8] Barrier wound dressings such as foam and gauze are the most commonly used dressings for the prevention of cross contamination and to provide the proper wound healing environment. The dressings are either without any antimicrobial or with embedded antimicrobial that forms an active layer between wound and dressing In these drug eluting dressings, the antimicrobial leaches out of the dressing and into the wound environment
