Abstract

Abstract The retention of dietary protein and the waste generated by turbot Scophthalmus maximus reared under intensive conditions over an experimental period of 5 months were estimated from nutritional budgets. The overall retention efficiency of dietary nitrogen was 35% and that of dietary phosphorus was 42%. Production of 1 kg of fish generated a loading of 51 g total nitrogen and 8.7 g total phosphorus in discharge to the external environment. On average, effluent water was enriched by 1.14 mg N/L and 0.195 mg P/L. The N : P ratio is lower than 6, close to that of the feed.
