Abstract

Since 1962 the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) at Los Banos, Philippines has trained more than 400 research workers from about 30 different countries in the tropics and subtropics. The main training approach used by IRRI involves the planning, design, execution, and reporting of one or more research projects. The primary educational objective associated with this approach is analysis. In 1972 a follow-up study of former IRRI research trainees was initiated to evaluate this approach. Questionnaire data were obtained from about 79% of former trainees who had been back home on the job at least 6 months. In general, former IRRI trainees assessed their previous training in positive terms. Consistent with the primary educational objective being pursued, the majority of former trainees continue emphasizing experimental research projects after returning home and are productive in generating new knowledge about rice (Oryza sativa L.) production in the tropics. Less attention is given, however, to applied research activities aimed at the actual development and testing of improved rice technology.
