Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of corn silk against gentamicin (Genta)-induced nephrotoxicity. Twenty four albino rats were divided into four equal groups as follow: (1) control group - not any treatment given to the group. (2) Genta group - 100 mg/kg i.p. per day of Genta. (3) Corn silk groups with different doses of 200mg/kg (4) and 400mg/kg, of corn silk extract was administered orally every day, and 100 mg/kg Genta was injected i.p. to rats. All animals were treated for 15 days. Plasma Urea and Creatinine levels were within the normal ranges in the control group (6.20±0.13 Mmol/L and 129.87±7.23 µ mol/L) respectively. Significant increase was observed in the Genta group (8.63±2.27Mmol/L and 167.97±4.61 µ mol/L) compared with the control group (6.20±0.09 Mmo/L and 129.87±7.23 µ mol/L). The corn silk group (200 and 400mg/kg) showed a significant decrease in both the urea and creatinine levels (6.16±0.15Mmol/L and 118.31±1.76 µ mol/L, 5.86±0.01Mmol/L and 111.34±1.76 µ mol/L), for the Corn silk extract administered 200 and 400mg/kg respectively. This has significantly shown a decrease both in serum Creatinine and Urea levels compared with Genta group (8.63±2.27Mmol/L and 167.97±4.61 µ mol/L). This suggested a remarkable curative effect of corn silk against nephrotoxicity.
