Abstract

We demonstrate coherent transients -Rabi oscillation and a photon echo- between hyperfine levels in isotopically purified 167Er3+ in Y 2 SiO 5 crystal at zero magnetic field. These observations provide us with optical param-eters such as the Rabi frequency and coherence time, which are indispensable for coherent manipulation of 167Er3+ electronic states. The estimated coherence time is longer than that in degenerated levels, which indicates that the use of the hyperfine sublevels in 167Er3+ is expected to exhibit longer memory time in quantum memories.
