Abstract

A formula proposed earlier for limiting the weight of trucks is evaluated for its effect on continuous‐span bridges. The critical weights of various typical vehicle configurations are calculated for several representative two‐ and three‐span bridge designs, including examples of both service‐load design and load‐factor design bridges. The effects of fatigue are also addressed. The proposed formula allows removal or raising of the existing arbitrary 80,000 lb gross vehicle weight limit associated with the current formula while protecting bridges from excessive levels of stress.
