Abstract

A review of localized osteitis and a study of its occurrence in mandibular third molar surgery are presented, with a review of the literature and an evaluation of 1,080 procedures. In the procedures reviewed, a significantly increased incidence of localized osteitis was found to occur in women taking oral contraceptives and in those cases in which surgical access demanded elevation of a mucoperiosteal flap to expose the external oblique ridge of the mandible. Findings also indicate no advantage in suturing for approximation of the mucoperiosteal flap, provided the flap returns passively to its desired position.
