Abstract
River islands present one of the important geomorphological features within the rivers streams that are formed due to the long and continuous moving of the waterway. Ten permanent river islands of Euphrates river within Kufa-Mishkhab sector have been selecting for studying and evaluation the geomorphological situations of the permanent river islands using remote sensing in the years 2002-2018. It was noted that the river islands of Euphrates river have been affected during the years of 2002-2018 in the river currents as well as varying in the size and shape of the islands due to the extent of the river stream, low slopes river floor, the curvature of the river, the type of the lithological sedimentary formations stream and type of the sediments loaded.
Highlights
River islands represent one of the important geomorphological features within the rivers that are formed due to the long and continuous moving of the waterway, these islands formed either at the center of the river or near its banks
There is a consolidation between the river islands and one of the sides of the nearby course due to several reasons, the most important of which is the large size of the clastic brought by the river during floods
The river islands in 2018 are the following: 1. The islands vary in area, that ranging from 342439 m2 in Al-Bakhatra and 10032 m2 in
Summary
River islands represent one of the important geomorphological features within the rivers that are formed due to the long and continuous moving of the waterway, these islands formed either at the center of the river or near its banks. The river islands are formed in the riverbeds due to the combination of several factors (Al-Dulaimi, 2010): (1) The rise of the river load of the sediments, especially during the floods, (2) Low speed of the river flow for many reasons, including A.
