Abstract

Permanent brachytherapy implants are used to treat early-stage lung cancer. However, the current brachytherapy dosimetry formalism assumes a homogeneous water medium and does not account for tissue heterogeneities. These heterogeneities have been investigated for 20-400 keV point sources to glean dosimetric trends independent of specific radionuclide emissions. The purpose of this study was to determine the dosimetric effects of tissue heterogeneities for permanent lung brachytherapy implants using realistic 103Pd, 125I, and 131Cs source models.
