Abstract
This chapter reviews concepts of forensic mental health assessment that are relevant to parenting capacity in child protection matters. It first provides an overview of the legal standards and procedures relevant to child protection matters before turning to a discussion of forensic mental health concepts, along with relevant empirical research. It then considers the empirical foundations and the limitations of evaluating parenting capacity in child protection matters, as well as the steps involved in the evaluation process. It also considers report writing and testimony for evaluations of parenting capacity in child protection matters.
